On Saturday 26 May 2018, the Gran Fondo Costa Almeria will take place for the first time, with the start and finish at the Hotel Marina Playa on the beautiful coastline of Mojacar.
National and international participants can choose one of two distances:
1. a 208km Gran Fondo with an altitude gain of 3,680m
2. a 120km Medio Fondo with an altitude gain of 1,780m.
After a neutralised start until Mojacar village, the parcours of the Gran Fondo goes to Garrucha, and then through Villaricos up the coast towards San Juan de los Terreros. The route then turns back and goes to Cuevas de Almanzora, before continuing to Lubrin via Antas, and then through El Pilar to Uleila del Campo (at 100km) to climb the Puerto de la Virgen (a 9.5km climb at an average 5%).
After the summit follows the most difficult part of the Gran Fondo, with 2 hard climbs in the next 40km. Back in Lubrin, the road climbs from El Marchal to El Campio (3.6km with an average 6.2%), and then after around 20km, at Turre, it descends. The last climb to overcome is on the way to Mojacar village, where the finish line is at the Hotel Marina Playa, at the end of 208km of cycling with an altitude gain of 3,680m.
In total there are 8 “official” climbs on the route, varying between category 2 and category 4.
The Medio Fondo follows the same start, but after the supply station in Lubrin turns off left towards the climb to El Campico, and then follows the same parcours to end at Hotel Marina Playa after 120km in the saddle.
With 4 “official” climbs, the Medio Fondo is a very nice challenge for less experienced cycle tourists who want to take their first steps into the world of the Gran Fondo!
To make the Gran Fondo Costa Almeria a safe event, Mojacar Council, the Provincial Government of Almeria, the Guardia Civil, Guardia Local and all other local councils will work together to ensure that the parcours has minimal traffic or is traffic-free during the race. In addition, official race cars, the Guardia Civil and Guardia Local, paramedics and volunteer marshalls will ensure the safety of cyclists on the day.
We hope that all participants have great at the #GFCA2018, and that they are #CYCLINGWITHASMILE
