Rock on. The Alto de El Cantal is a towering rock right by the sea which rises suddenly out of the plain and in its domination of the landscape seems much higher than its 385 meters. It's just over half way round this ride. Climbing it gives vistas forever inland and descending offers spectacular views of the coast.
This route goes out through the country into the adjoining province of Murcia and into the Sierra de Almenara mountains which is a protected region.
It then follows the lovely Barranca De Los Assensios valley through the foothills of the Almenara range.
When you have conquered The Rock the reward is a flat run home skirting the seaside town of Aguilas and then along by the sea following the quiet coast road back to Mojacar with a side trip to our favourite Carolina Beach along the way.
